Concord ‘Survivor’ Yul Kwon special guest at music program
August 16 will be Yul Kwon Day at the Thursday evening concert in Concord. The 2006 winner of the reality television show “Survivor” was raised in Concord and attended Northgate High School. He went on to attend Stanford University and Yale Law School. He is now a management consultant living in San Mateo.
Kwon will make a special appearance at the August 16 Thursday Night Music and Market program at Todos Santos Plaza. The program will feature a “Survivor” theme in his honor, with music provided by Caribbean/rock band Ape at 6:30 p.m., followed by a showing of the 1967 Disney animated classic ‘Jungle Book’. The Farmers’ Market will be in the park from 4 to 8 p.m.
City officials will present Kwon with a proclamation designating August 16 as Yul Kwon Day during the band’s intermission at 7:15 p.m. and Kwon will also be introduced from the stage just before the showing of the film at 8:15 p.m.
“We are very excited that Yul is coming to Concord,” said Downtown Coordinator Florence Weiss. “He is definitely a role model for young people, and we are pleased to be able to welcome him ‘home’ to the Todos Santos stage.”
Three additional music and movie nights will attract families to Todos Santos Plaza in August. On Aug. 9, Sinatra tribute singer Rick Ellis sets the mood for a showing of the movie classic “On the Town.”
Visitors can chill out on Aug. 23 when it will snow in Todos Santos Plaza, creating a Winter Wonderland. Musical guest Golden Bough will contribute Celtic holiday tunes to the festivities followed by the movie “March of the Penguins.”
Movie nights conclude Aug. 30 with a visit from the Sun Kings, a well-known Beatles tribute band. The big screen will feature a compilation of musical acts as seen on the Ed Sullivan Show, including the Beatles performing “Twist and Shout,” vintage Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Martha and the Vandellas.
The Thursday Night Music and Market series continues through Sept. 20 with the Farmers’ Market in the plaza from 4 to 8 p.m. and music from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Todos Santos Plaza is located on Willow Pass Road between Grant and Mt. Diablo streets. Free parking is available at either of the two municipal parking garages with entrances on Salvio Street.
