Concord City Council begins process to appoint councilmember

At its meeting on Thursday, Aug. 16, the Concord City Council unanimously voted to begin the process to appoint a new Councilmember to fill the seat left vacant by the untimely Aug. 4 death of Councilmember Michael Chavez.

By state law, the City Council has until September 4, 2007 to appoint a new councilmember or to call for a special election, which would take place in February 2008. Councilmember Chavez was elected to a four-year term in November 2006. The new councilmember will serve the remainder of the term.

The Concord City Council is now accepting applications from residents who wish to fill the vacancy. Applicants must be registered voters at their current residence in the City of Concord, citizens of the United States, 18 years of age or older, and not disqualified from holding office by the Constitution or laws of the State of California.

Application packets are available online at www.cityofconcord.org, at city offices, or by calling (925) 671-3430. The deadline for submittal of applications is Thursday, Aug. 23, 5 p.m. at the office of the City Clerk.

The City Council is scheduled to interview qualifying applicants at a meeting on Monday, Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chamber. The meeting will be televised.

At its regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 4, the City Council will vote to select a candidate from among the applicants. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, the City Council will call for a special election in February 2008.

For more information about the application process, contact City Clerk Mary Rae Lehman at (925) 671-3495 or visit the City of Concord Web site at www.cityofconcord.org.
