“No Child Left Inside” invites families to ride the Iron Horse Trail
Mayor Mark Peterson invites Concord families to join him for a free bike ride on the Iron Horse Trail Saturday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Riders will meet in the Willows Shopping Center, 1975 Diamond Blvd. near El Torito Restaurant and ride between Marsh Road and Monument Boulevard in Concord.
The event will also feature a bicycle ride contest (with a chance to win bicycle gear), a bike rodeo activity, free bicycle licensing, bicycle tune-ups, sponsor booths to provide information on bicycle safety and trail usage, refreshments and giveaways.
The first 40 children participants will receive a free bicycle helmet. Children must be accompanied by an adult to participate in the event and all children and adult participants must provide their own bicycle and helmet.
Participating sponsors include the Concord Police Department, REI, Contra Costa Health, Contra Costa 511, Safe Moves, the Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay, Jamba Juice and Clif Bar.
This is the third of four free ‘No Child Left Inside’ activities led by Peterson in 2007 aimed at improving the health and fitness of Concord’s children.
“I’m very happy with the number of families who turned out for our first two events – the hike through Lime Ridge Open Space and the Family Pool Party,” he said. “It’s our way of raising awareness about the alarming rise in childhood obesity.”
The final “No Child Left Inside” activity is a sports sampler day at Concord’s Community Youth Center in December.
