Concord City Council appoints Bjerke to vacant seat

At its meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 4, the Concord City Council unanimously voted to appoint Guy Bjerke to the seat left vacant by the death of Councilmember Michael Chavez in August.

Bjerke, a Concord Planning Commissioner since 2001, was the successful candidate out of a field of 18 candidates. He will serve out the remainder of Councilmember Chavez’s term through November 2010.

“We are delighted to have Guy Bjerke join us on the City Council,” said Mayor Mark Peterson. “We feel his background and seven years experience on the Planning Commission will allow him to quickly get up to speed on the many pressing issues that are scheduled to come before the City Council in the next few months.”

In his application for the Council seat, Bjerke outlined what he felt were the top three issues facing Concord – creating and maintaining a safe community, actively managing the city budget, and planning for the future, including the Concord Naval Weapons Station Reuse Process, General Plan Update, Zoning Ordinance revision and the redevelopment plans for the Monument Corridor and North Concord.

Bjerke has been a Concord resident for 18 years. He has a B.A. in Government from CSU, Sacramento and is enrolled in the Masters in Public Administration program at CSU, East Bay – Concord Campus.

In addition to serving on the Planning Commission, Bjerke was served on the Concord Youth Sports Foundation from 1997-2000, and chaired the City’s Budget Review Committee in 1994.

Bjerke is employed by the City of Antioch as its Economic Development Director. He and his wife, Denise, have two children.
