Concord’s BIG READ features film series

Concord, CA (Oct. 27, 2007) A free screening of Francois Truffaut’s 1966 film “Fahrenheit 451” will be held at Brenden Theatre on Monday evening, Oct. 15 beginning at 7 p.m. The screening is in conjunction with the Concord Library’s BIG READ program, which encourages the entire community to read and discuss a single book, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury.

“We thought it would be fun and enlightening for the community to see the film version of our BIG READ selection, which is considered a science fiction masterpiece,” said Concord Librarian Maureen Kilmurry.

In addition to screening the film version of “Fahrenheit 451,” the library is also sponsoring a free Science Fiction Film Festival with the theme “Dystopian Societies” (dystopian societies are the opposite of utopian societies).

The films will be shown at the Concord Library, 2900 Salvio St., on Saturday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m.

  • Oct. 6: “Soylent Green”: The year is 2022. Society is dependent on an artificial food source, "Soylent Green." But there's a mystery behind the popular food cube, one that our hero is determined to figure out.
  • Oct. 13: “THX 1138”: A man whose mind and body are controlled by the government makes a harrowing attempt to escape from a world where thoughts are controlled, freedom is an impossibility and love is the ultimate crime.
  • Oct. 20: “Equilibrium”: In a Fascist future where all forms of feeling are illegal, a man in charge of enforcing the law rises to overthrow the system.
