Concord recognized for commitment to community forestry

Concord has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of the city’s commitment to community forestry. This is the 27th consecutive year that Concord has received this national recognition.

In addition, Concord is one of only five cities in California to celebrate its Growth Award Sterling Year. This designation is given to cities that have earned the Tree City USA Growth Award for ten years. The prestigious Growth Award recognizes environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities.

Cities earning Growth Awards have demonstrated progress in their community forestry program in the following activity areas: education and public relations, publicity, continuing education for tree workers, arborist workshop, planning and management, municipal funding, standards and specifications, tree planting and maintenance and tree preservation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Forests and the USDA Forest Service.

“Trees in our cities and towns help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperature and bring nature into our daily lives,” said John Rosenow, Chief Executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

“Tree City USA designation recognizes the work of elected officials, staff and citizens who plant and care for the community forest. Trees are a vital component of the infrastructure of our cities and towns, and provide environmental and economical benefits. A community that recognizes these benefits and provides needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks.”
