Concord celebrates Arbor Day June 10

Concord will celebrate Arbor Day on Wednesday, June 10, 1 p.m. at Lime Ridge Open Space, off of Treat Boulevard.

Cub Scout Pack 380 and Girl Scout Troop 31941 from Woodside Elementary School will assist with the planting of 10 blue oak trees in the area overlooking the meadow behind the Lime Ridge community building.

"We picked blue oaks because they are California natives and require little water," said Parks Manager John Rego. "The City has to reduce its landscaping water use by 45% this year because of water rationing, so we want to use Arbor Day to highlight the fact that there are many California natives that are drought tolerant."

The celebration coincides with Concord's designation by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for the 28th consecutive year. Concord was one of the first cities in California to qualify for this national recognition.

Concord also received the Tree City Growth Award for the 11th year. The Growth Award was established in 1991 to recognize environmental improvements and high levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities.
