Concord, Central San complete $21 million joint sewer line project

The City of Concord and the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (Central San) will celebrate the completion of a $21 million sewer project with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Concord Pump Station, 2050 Waterworld Parkway.

In June, the public saw dramatic photos of the project in the local media when one of the narrow old sewer pipes was suspended from a crane as a massive new pipe, 8 feet in diameter, was installed. The project involved a nearly mile-long extension of a sewer interceptor line, which has eliminated the need for the City's 30-year old pump station, saving about $300,000 a year.

An average of 12 million gallons of sewage flows every day from Concord and Clayton to the Central San treatment plant located near I-680 and Hwy 4. Replacing the aging pipe and pump station with a gravity-fed system means there will be no chance of sewer overflows due to equipment failure or electric power breakdowns.
