Concord eliminates 13 positions
The City of Concord has notified 13 employees that their positions are being eliminated effective Oct. 30. The notifications were made in individual meetings on Monday, Sept. 28.
"I sincerely regret that we have had to take this step," said City Manager Dan Keen. "These are good people, and the layoffs have nothing to do with the quality of their work. We have to eliminate positions to balance our budget. This is an unfortunate reality."
The City is facing at $14 million reduction in general fund revenue due to the recession. The City Council approved a multi-pronged strategy to address the shortfall in the fiscal year 2009-10 budget through early retirements, program reductions, salary and benefit reductions, and finally, layoffs.
Forty-two (42) positions were identified in the City's 09-10 budget for elimination, but many of the employees in those positions choose to participate in the City's recent early retirement program. Some of the thirteen employees who have been noticed that they will experience a lay-off may elect to explore transfer opportunities within the City created by the 64 recent early retirements, as more than two dozen of those positions are budgeted to be refilled.
The City is offering the affected employees career development and job placement services to support them in their effort finding new jobs.
