DadDay event salutes heroes, features Motown music, chili contest
The City of Concord presents DadDay in the Park on Father's Day, June 20 in Todos Santos Plaza in downtown Concord.
"This year we are celebrating heroes, including all our dads plus the local heroes who work in our police and fire departments," says downtown manager Florence Weiss. "The police and firemen are competing in the first annual DadDay Chili Cook-Off, there will be a beer garden, and we're all looking forward to great Motown music by The Best Intentions."
The Chili Cook-Off event starts at 11 a.m. with seven firefighter and police teams in competition for coveted prizes in the Best Chili, Best No-Beef Chili and Best Decorated Booth contests. There will be a nominal charge for tasting and voting on the winner in each category.
The cook-off will be accompanied by music from the stage between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. with Motown headliners, The Best Intentions, taking the stage at 2 p.m.
The free event includes the announcement of the winners in the Best Dad essay contest.
Free music continues all summer in the plaza. "Tuesdays at Noon" features a variety of performers on stage from 12 to 1:30 p.m. during the year-round Farmers' Market, which is in the plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In July, the Tuesday music series moves to the evening, when "Tuesday Night Blues" offers a variety of blues artists from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The "Thursday Music and Market" series features musical guests performing from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with the Farmers' Market in the plaza from 4 to 8 p.m.
Todos Santos Plaza is located in downtown Concord on Willow Pass Road between Mt. Diablo and Grant streets. Free parking is available in the Todos Santos Parking Center on Salvio between Mt. Diablo Street and Concord Avenue and in the Salvio Street Garage on Salvio between Grant and Colfax streets.
