Concord celebrates Public Works Week May 15-21
The City of Concord will celebrate Public Works Week from May 15-21. Concord's event coincides with the 51st annual celebration of National Public Works Week in America.
Since 1960, public agencies have used Public Works Week to educate and inform the public about the essential role that public works plays in the quality of community life. Across the nation, tens of thousands of Public Works professionals will draw attention to the many important ways that public works improve the daily lives of those they serve.
Concord's Public Works Department maintains all of the City's facilities, parks, trees, open spaces and playgrounds, keeps streets and traffic signals in good repair, makes sure storm water and sewer systems operate efficiently and removes graffiti. This year, the City won the California Parks & Recreation Society's Award of Excellence for Maintenance Management and Operations.
The 2011 National Public Works Week theme "Public Works: Serving You and Your Community" provides an opportunity for residents to appreciate public buildings, streets, bridges, highways, sewers, solid waste facilities, street lights, traffic signals, dams, storm drains, drinking water facilities and other public works.
“Our young people must know that Public Works has thousands of rewarding careers, from the professionals who envision future communities, to the engineers who design them, to the dedicated men and women who operate and maintain the facilities, infrastructure, and systems that protect and enhance our quality of life every day,” notes Fleet Manager Jeff Roubal. “Public works professionals maintain a proud tradition of community service by improving the quality of life for all of us and for our future generations. “
