Concord Pavilion to host first World Functional Fitness Championships

The Concord Pavilion will host the inaugural International Functional Fitness Federation (iF3) World Championships on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 and 22 beginning at 9:00 a.m. each day.

Functional Fitness is a sport that tests how well-rounded athletes' proficiencies are across a variety of movement patterns, activities, and energy systems that require very different skill sets. An athlete may be tasked with a long run to test their endurance followed by an activity that requires lifting of a heavy object as a show of strength, but in each event the athlete is prescribed a certain amount of work – such as a number of repetitions of the movement to complete as quickly as possible – and the athlete who completes the work the fastest is the winner of that event.

The 2017 International Functional Fitness Federation Championships invite countries to send functional fitness athletes to represent their nation for two days, featuring both team and individual competitions. Athletes competing were selected by their National Federation participating in the event. The event will bring athletes from the U.S., the UK, Sweden, Mexico, Ireland, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

"We are excited to host the inaugural iF3 World Championships and share Concord with athletes from around the world," said Pedro Garcia, Economic Development Specialist at the City of Concord. "Concord has become a leader in hosting fast growing international sports, having recently hosted the World Racquetball Tour's West Coast Championship, USA Pickleball Association's Golden State tournament and the Contra Costa Throwdown functional fitness competition held this past year."

Concord VIBE, the city's marketing initiative promoting the city to young professionals is set to sponsor and host a Concord Fitness Business Expo, where there will be an array of different fitness-related businesses with booth space to promote their products or services at the event.

Tickets are now on sale at at $20 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and under. Concord residents can get discounted tickets ($15 adults, $10 kids) on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pavilion box office, located at the entrance to the facility at 2000 Kirker Pass Road. To participate, residents must bring a utility bill and driver's license (or other government-issued ID) with matching addresses. There is no service charge.

The iF3 is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that acts as the international governing body for competitive functional fitness. The iF3 hopes for the sport to be in a position to be considered for the Olympic Games by the time the Games return to Los Angeles in 2028.
