MetroFi Wireless Internet Initiative

Concord Wi-Fi Network

The City of Concord has partnered with MetroFi, Inc. of Mountain View to offer free, wireless Internet access to Concord’s city workers, residents, businesses and visitors. The free Internet access is sponsored by online advertising, and delivered through a municipal Wi-Fi network being deployed citywide (with MetroFi capital, not city funds).

The “MetroFi-Free” service provides access speeds of up to 1Mbps download and 256kbps upload. There are no fees or contracts required, but you do need a Wi-Fi (802.11.a/b) enabled computer, Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), or similar device, and in some locations (particularly indoors), a signal-boosting Wi-Fi modem is recommended as well. After a one-time registration (and agreement to the Acceptable Use Policy), you can immediately use the free service as often and for as long as you like.

MetroFi maintains a website of information about the Concord Wi-Fi network and its other Bay Area networks. On the website, you’ll find an interactive, real-time map of the Concord network’s current coverage area, information about how to logon, FAQs, news updates and more.

Project Status

The initial pilot program concluded in November 2006, and MetroFi has completed the first phase buildout. The network is now two-thirds complete, and will continue to grow through 2008.
