Earth Day

Fog settling on Mt. Diablo in Concord, CAEarth Day reminds the people of the world of the need for continuing care which is vital to Earth's survival. Earth Day is celebrated on the vernal equinox, the time when the Sun crosses the equator making night and day of equal length in all parts of the Earth.

The vernal equinox was observed as the beginning of a new year in ancient China, England, Persia (Iran), Egypt, North and South America. At the moment of the equinox, the sun is setting at the South Pole and rising at the North Pole. On the equator at noon you will cast no shadow.
