Household Hazardous Waste
What can I do with all the jars and bottles of household chemicals I want to throw away? Don't throw those bottles in the trash or dump them in the side yard. Some of these bottles and cans may contain hazardous waste. Hazardous waste consists of substances that can poison, corrode, explode or ignite when handled improperly. They can threaten public health and the environment. It is illegal to dispose of these substances in the trash, on the ground, down household drains or storm drains.
Here in Concord, we have a wonderful Household Hazardous Waste
Disposal Facility. It is located at 4797 Imhoff Place adjacent to
the county animal control shelter. This facility accepts household
hazardous waste from residences for recycling. It is open Tuesday
through Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge to Concord
residents for this service and no appointment is necessary.
Folks at the facility take household cleaning products, mercury (thermometers, fluorescent bulbs), used motor oil, batteries, brake and transmission fluids, antifreeze, solvents, oil-based and latex paint, wood stain, paint remover, aerosol cans, automotive care products, garden care and pest control products, pool chemicals, glues, resins and other materials. State transportation regulations limit residents to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of waste per vehicle per visit. Individual containers are limited to 5 gallons each.
Items that are not accepted include explosives (ammunition
and picric acid), radioactive waste, infectious medical waste, unlabeled
pressurized cylinders, and wastes contaminated with PCBs. Call ahead
at 1-800-646-1431 if you have any questions or visit the web site
at www.centralsan.org.
