Mosquito and West Nile virus issues in Contra Costa County are handled by the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District, a public health agency established by Contra Costa County residents in 1927.

Today, programs and services are available for more than just mosquito abatement, including yellow jackets, Africanized honey bees, ticks, rats, mice, and skunks.

What to do if you have concerns about a mosquito problem in your neighborhood

If you have concerns about a growing mosquito problem in your neighborhood, please contact the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District (CCMVCD). CCMVCD can be reached by phone at (925) 685-9301 ext. 100 from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. You can also submit a request for an on-site service visit on the CCMVCD service request page of the Web site.

Facts about West Nile Virus in Concord

  • West Nile virus is a disease contracted by birds that is transmitted from bird to bird by mosquitoes.
  • It can occasionally cause meningoencephalitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord) in susceptible people or animals that are bitten by infected mosquitoes.
  • The program to protect residents from West Nile Virus is managed by the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District.
  • Concord’s representative on the district board is Angela Michaels-Tibbals.
